澳大利亚中文百科于2005年开始筹划，2007年发布第一个测试版本，2009年发布第二个测试版本，2010年2月14日发布正式版并对公众开放。

澳大利亚中文百科是澳洲澳宝网络(AOBO)公共网络计划的一部分，允许用户自由的免费共享有关澳大利亚的各种信息，由澳宝网络提供网络服务，技术支持和会员管理。
